Went to an open mic night, which rarely happens here in Dubai, it was cool. Dubai is a funny place, so many people with dreams of stardom, but a lot of times money and wealth isn’t enabling them to develop it, on the contrary, it disables them. I remember the times in my life I have been without money; they are the times I have been most active with my work and the most hungry for success. When you have money, there are too many distractions and you become comfortable. There are many examples of great talent born out of extreme poverty and terrible conditions; I don’t believe that’s a coincidence.
That’s why it was so good for me to live in Ghana and that’s part of the reason why I always go back, their burning desire to make something of themselves. It's not always with the motivation of money, but with the goal of leaving something behind, being seen and heard and remembered. Some of the boyz would walk 2-3 hours in the burning sun or sit on a cramped bus for 2 hours to get to the studio, the same studio I basically woke up and walked straight into. They would try to hussle together some money to get an hour or two in there, just to get a verse down that they could perform with at the local showcases. That’s devotion. Wish everyone who has lived privileged lives like me would get that eye-opener, but not everyone wants to see...
